The Escort MAX 360c MKII and Uniden R8 are the two most cross-shopped dual-antenna detectors, and on paper they’re closer than the price gap suggests. Both have front and rear antennas, directional arrows, MultaRadar detection and GPS lockouts. Choose the R8 for RDD stealth and no subscriptions; choose the MAX 360c MKII for Wi-Fi updates and CarPlay or Android Auto alerts.

The R8 scores a perfect 10.0 on our radar detector rubric, which weighs the hardware that decides how early and how reliably you get warned, and the MAX 360c MKII scores 9.3. Both have a phone app; the one point the Escort misses is a stealth claim. The R8w also scores 10.0. You can see where every model lands in our full radar detector rankings.

Do they detect the same threats?

Yes. Both cover X, K, Ka and laser, and both detect MultaRadar CD/CT, the low-power photo-enforcement radar that older and cheaper detectors miss entirely. Both also let you narrow the Ka band to the segments police actually use, which cuts false alerts and speeds up detection.

One detail worth knowing: Escort ships the MAX 360c MKII with MultaRadar detection switched off. If you drive where photo radar is common, turn it on in the settings menu on day one.

Front and rear antennas: is there a difference?

Not in the published specs. Each uses a dual-antenna design with one antenna facing forward and one facing back, and each drives a set of directional arrows from it. That’s the feature to prioritise in this price class. A rear antenna picks up radar from a cruiser behind you that a front-only detector hears late or not at all, and the arrows tell you instantly whether an alert is the patrol car ahead or a store door behind.

Escort’s version runs on its M13 platform. Uniden adds a rear-balance setting that lets you reduce rear sensitivity, which is handy if a rear antenna gets chatty on your commute.

Which handles false alerts better?

Both use GPS to learn and lock out stationary false sources, such as automatic doors and blind-spot systems, so they get quieter the longer you drive the same routes. The R8’s manual lists Auto Mute Memory with room for up to 1,750 lockouts. Escort calls its version AutoLearn and pairs it with a traffic-sensor filter.

Where they split is how they stay current. The MAX 360c MKII has dual-band Wi-Fi and updates its firmware and database automatically. The R8 has Bluetooth for Uniden’s R/TACH app but no Wi-Fi, so firmware and camera-database updates still run through Uniden’s R/TACH Tool on a computer. That’s not a dealbreaker, but it’s a chore the Escort removes.

Stealth: the R8’s biggest advantage

Uniden claims the R8 is undetectable by Spectre I and IV, the radar-detector detectors some police use. Escort makes no such claim for the MAX 360c MKII.

For most drivers in most states this doesn’t matter, because detectors are legal and nobody is scanning for them. It matters a lot if you drive commercially or travel through places where detectors are banned. Check the rules for your route in our radar detector laws by state table before you rely on stealth.

App, CarPlay and camera alerts

This is the MAX 360c MKII’s home turf. It pairs with Escort’s Drive Smarter app, which shares crowd-sourced alerts and puts them on Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. It also supports Escort’s Defender database of red-light and speed cameras, though that database is a paid subscription after purchase: $24.95 for one year or $49.95 for three.

The R8 includes red-light and speed-camera alerts too, with no subscription, and it now pairs over Bluetooth with Uniden’s R/TACH app for settings changes and on-phone alerts. What it can’t do is update itself: there’s no Wi-Fi. If you like the R8’s hardware and want wireless updates, look at the Uniden R8w, the Wi-Fi version Uniden now points buyers to while the R8 shows sold out on its own store.

Which should you buy?

Buy the Uniden R8 (or R8w) if you want the most detector for your money, value RDD stealth, or don’t want an ongoing subscription. The R8 scores a perfect 10.0 to the Escort’s 9.3, and the R8w matches that 10.0 while adding Wi-Fi updates.

Buy the Escort MAX 360c MKII if hands-off Wi-Fi updates, phone alerts and CarPlay or Android Auto integration are worth it to you, and you’re comfortable paying for Defender. It launched at $699.95.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Uniden R8 better than the Escort MAX 360c MKII?

On our rubric the R8 edges it, 10.0 to 9.3. Their detection hardware is near-identical: dual antennas, arrows, MultaRadar detection and GPS lockouts, and both work with a phone app. The R8 adds RDD stealth; the Escort adds Wi-Fi updates and CarPlay/Android Auto alerts. Pick by which extra matters to you.

Does the Uniden R8 have an app?

Yes. The R8 pairs over Bluetooth with Uniden's R/TACH app for settings changes and on-phone alerts. It has no Wi-Fi, so firmware and camera-database updates still run through Uniden's R/TACH Tool on a computer. The R8w adds Wi-Fi updates.

Do I need a subscription for the Escort MAX 360c MKII?

The detector works without one, but Escort's Defender red-light and speed-camera database costs $24.95 for one year or $49.95 for three.

Can police tell if I'm using either detector?

Uniden claims the R8 is undetectable by Spectre I and IV radar-detector detectors. Escort makes no stealth claim for the MAX 360c MKII, which matters where detectors are banned.
