How we picked arrow detectors

We scoped our 26-detector database to the 11 models with directional arrows and ranked them on our published rubric, which weighs antennas, arrows, MultaRadar detection, GPS and automatic lockouts at 2 points each, and Ka segmentation, camera alerts, RDD stealth and a phone app at 1 each, out of 14. The full method is on our how we evaluate page.

We don’t rank on claimed range, which no manufacturer publishes in comparable form. Where detectors tie, we break the tie on the hardware behind the arrows and on what it costs to keep the unit current.

Yes

Escort's flagship portable radar and laser detector, with a dual-front, single-rear antenna array, directional arrows, GPS AutoLearn and TotalShield RDD stealth. It suits drivers who want Escort's top portable detection and stealth.

Strengths

  • Dual front and single rear antennas with three LNAs, plus 360-degree arrows
  • TotalShield technology, which Escort says makes it undetectable by radar-detector detectors
  • Software-defined radio receiver and Blackfin DSP
  • GPS AutoLearn, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth with the Drive Smarter app

Watch out for

  • X band is detected by the front antennas only
  • The Defender camera database needs a paid subscription ($24.95 for 1 year or $49.95 for 3 years)
  • MultaRadar CD/CT detection is off by default

Three arrow detectors score 10.0: the Escort Redline 360c and Redline Ci 360c and the Uniden R8w. The Redline 360c wins the tie on antenna hardware. It runs dual front antennas and a single rear, with three low-noise amplifiers, a software-defined radio receiver and a Blackfin DSP. The R8w lists one front and one rear antenna.

It has GPS AutoLearn, Ka segmentation, MultaRadar CD/CT detection and Escort’s TotalShield stealth claim, plus Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and the Drive Smarter app. It launched at $749.95. Watch two details: X band is detected by the front antennas only, so an X-band source behind you shows late, and MultaRadar detection ships switched off. Escort’s Defender camera database costs $24.95 for one year or $49.95 for three.

GPS
Yes

A windshield-mount GPS radar and laser detector with front and rear antennas, directional arrows, Wi-Fi updates and Bluetooth app control. It suits highway drivers who want Uniden's top portable features with wireless updates.

Strengths

  • Front and rear antennas with on-screen arrows for front, side or rear threats
  • Built-in Wi-Fi for firmware and camera database updates, plus Bluetooth to the R/TACH app
  • Detects MultaRadar CD/CT and Gatso RT3/RT4, with Ka segmentation
  • Auto Mute Memory with up to 1,750 GPS lockouts; manual claims Spectre I/IV undetectable

Watch out for

  • Shown as sold out on uniden.com when checked
  • Laser jamming needs optional transponders sold separately

The Uniden R8w ties at 10.0 and is the better buy if you’d rather not pay for camera alerts or use Escort’s app. Its on-screen arrows show threats ahead, beside or behind. Built-in Wi-Fi updates firmware and the camera database, and Bluetooth connects the R/TACH app.

Auto Mute Memory learns stationary false alerts with room for 1,750 GPS lockouts, and it detects MultaRadar CD/CT and Gatso RT3/RT4. Uniden’s manual claims it’s undetectable by Spectre I and IV RDDs. Laser jamming needs optional transponders. Uniden’s store showed it sold out when we checked.

Yes

A windshield-mount GPS radar and laser detector with front and rear antennas, directional arrows and MultaRadar detection. It suits drivers who want directional alerts without paying for Wi-Fi or app features.

Strengths

  • Dual front and rear antennas with per-band arrow colors
  • Detects MultaRadar CD/CT, with Ka segmentation
  • Up to 2,000 GPS lockout and user mark points plus red-light/speed camera alerts
  • Manufacturer claims Spectre I/IV undetectable

Watch out for

  • Lockouts (Mute Memory) are saved manually; there is no automatic false-alert learning
  • No Bluetooth or Wi-Fi; updates use the R-Series Update Tool on a computer
  • Shown as sold out on uniden.com when checked

The Uniden R7 scores 7.9 and has the most informative arrows on paper: they change color by band, so you can tell a Ka threat behind you from a K-band door ahead at a glance. It stores up to 2,000 GPS lockout and user mark points, detects MultaRadar, supports Ka segmentation and carries the Spectre I/IV stealth claim.

There are two caveats. Its lockouts are manual: you save each Mute Memory point yourself, which is why it scores below the R8. And it has no Bluetooth or Wi-Fi; updates use the R-Series Update Tool on a computer. It also showed as sold out on Uniden’s store. If you can find one and don’t mind marking lockouts yourself, it’s a full-featured arrow detector.

A windshield-mount GPS radar and laser detector with dual antennas, 360-degree directional arrows and Bluetooth app connectivity. It suits drivers who want the MAX 360 platform's directional alerts without paying for Wi-Fi updates.

Strengths

  • Dual-antenna M13 platform with 360-degree directional arrows
  • GPS AutoLearn lockouts and Defender camera alerts
  • Ka and K segmentation, Ka-POP and TSR filter
  • Bluetooth link to Drive Smarter with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

Watch out for

  • No automatic Wi-Fi updates, unlike the MAX 360c MKII
  • The Defender camera database needs a paid subscription ($24.95 for 1 year or $49.95 for 3 years)
  • No RDD stealth claim from Escort

The Escort MAX 360 MKII is the top-scoring arrow detector with a launch MSRP of $600 or less. It launched at $599.95 and scores 9.3, losing only the stealth point. It runs Escort’s dual-antenna M13 platform with 360-degree arrows, GPS AutoLearn, Ka and K segmentation, Ka-POP and a TSR traffic-sensor filter.

It links to Drive Smarter over Bluetooth with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but doesn’t update over Wi-Fi. The MAX 360c MKII, which launched at $699.95, adds dual-band Wi-Fi updates on the same hardware. Our MAX 360c MKII vs Uniden R8 comparison covers that matchup in detail.

  • Wider body than other MAX models

The Escort MAXcam 360c is the only detector we track with a dash cam built in: 2560x1440 at 30fps, with a 16GB card included. Its detection side has a single front and single rear antenna with 360-degree arrows, MultaRadar CD and CT, Ka segmentation and GPS AutoLearn. It scores 9.3 and launched at $849.95.

Escort says it is detectable by radar-detector detectors, and its body is wider than other MAX models. The built-in camera saves one windshield mount, but a 1440p camera with a 16GB card is well short of a dedicated dash cam; see our dash cam rankings if recording is the priority.

A custom-installed radar and laser defense system with front and rear radar receivers, a remote OLED display and VX Laser Shifters. It suits drivers who want a hidden, professionally installed setup.

Strengths

  • Front and rear radar receivers on dual M14 antennas with Blackfin DSP
  • Five VX Laser Shifters included, with support for up to six
  • TotalShield technology, which Escort says makes it undetectable by radar-detector detectors
  • GPS AutoLearn, Defender database, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi with Drive Smarter

Watch out for

  • Needs professional installation
  • Laser shifters (jammers) are illegal in some states
  • MultaRadar CD/CT detection is off by default

The Redline Ci 360c is the top-scoring remote-mount detector at 10.0. Front and rear radar receivers on dual M14 antennas feed arrows on a remote OLED display, and five VX Laser Shifters come in the box, with support for six. It launched at $4,299.95 and needs professional installation.

Nothing sits on the windshield or dash, which avoids state windshield rules entirely. Laser shifters are jammers, and Escort notes they’re illegal in some states. The Uniden R9w (9.3) is the hidden alternative with integrated laser transponders, but Uniden publishes no price and its manual makes no stealth claim.

Why do directional arrows matter?

An alert without direction is a guess. With arrows, a K-band alert from behind just after you pass a pharmacy is almost certainly its automatic door; the same alert from ahead on an empty highway is worth slowing for. Arrows also track a threat as you move: an arrow that swings from front to side to rear as you pass a parked car tells you the source was that car.

That’s why our rubric gives arrows 2 points on their own, the same as a rear antenna, MultaRadar detection, GPS or automatic lockouts. Arrows turn a detector from an alarm into a source of information.

Do you need a rear antenna?

For arrows to work, yes, and every arrow detector in our database has one. The rear antenna has its own value too. A front-only detector picks up radar from a patrol car behind you only when the signal reflects back from traffic or terrain ahead, which can be late or never. A rear antenna hears it directly.

Front-only detectors aren’t useless: the best of them, such as the Uniden R4w, score 7.1 with GPS lockouts and MultaRadar detection. But the 2.9-point gap between them and a 10.0 detector is exactly the rear antenna and arrows. Uniden’s R8 adds a rear-balance setting to turn rear sensitivity down if it’s chatty on your commute. Our full radar detector rankings include the front-only models.

Valentine One or a GPS detector with arrows?

The Valentine One Gen2 is the detector that made arrows famous, and it still has them: front and rear antennas, front and rear laser sensors, and Radar Locator arrows for ahead, beside and behind. It covers Ka from 33.4 to 36.0 GHz without segmentation and connects to the free V1connection app over Bluetooth 5.0. It launched at $499.

What it doesn’t have is GPS. That means no automatic lockouts, no camera database and no speed-based muting, and Valentine doesn’t claim MultaRadar detection. Its alerts are tones rather than voice, and a frequency readout needs the separate Tech Display. That’s 8 of 14 points missing, for a score of 4.3.

The V1 still suits experienced drivers who want every signal and prefer to interpret them. For most drivers, a GPS detector with arrows, like the R8w or MAX 360 MKII, delivers the same directional information with far fewer alerts to sort through.

Which arrow detectors are stealthy to RDDs?

Six of the 11 arrow detectors in our data carry a manufacturer stealth claim against radar-detector detectors (RDDs): the Escort Redline 360c and Redline Ci 360c (TotalShield), the Uniden R7, R8 and R8w (Spectre I and IV), and the Valentine One Gen2. The Escort MAX 360 MKII, MAX 360c MKII and Uniden R9w make no claim, Escort says the MAXcam 360c is detectable, and the Radenso RC M makes no claim either.

These are manufacturer claims; we haven’t seen independent, published verification for any of them, and stealth only matters where someone is looking. Our undetectable radar detector rankings cover every stealth model, including front-only ones. That’s mostly where detectors are banned: in passenger cars in Virginia and Washington D.C., and in commercial vehicles over 10,000 lbs nationwide.

How should you mount an arrow detector?

Arrows only work if both antennas can see out. Mount the detector high and centred on the windshield or on a mirror mount, level with the road, so the front antenna has a clear view ahead and the rear antenna looks back through the cabin and rear window. Keep it clear of any metallic tint band at the top of the glass, which can block radar.

Inside the car, anything solid between the detector and the rear window weakens the rear antenna: headrests in tall SUVs, cargo stacked high, a partition in a van. If rear alerts seem late, try a lower or more central position, and on the Uniden R8, check the rear-balance setting before blaming the hardware.

Remember the windshield rules, too. Minnesota and Florida don’t list radar detectors among the items allowed on the windshield, so a dash or visor mount may be the safer choice there.

Which radar detector with arrows should you buy?

  • Best overall: Escort Redline 360c.
  • No subscriptions, Wi-Fi updates: Uniden R8w, or the R8 if you’ll update by computer.
  • Best value from Escort: MAX 360 MKII.
  • One windshield unit for detection and recording: Escort MAXcam 360c.
  • Nothing visible: Escort Redline Ci 360c.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best radar detector with arrows?

On our rubric, the Escort Redline 360c. It's one of three arrow detectors scoring 10.0, and its two-front, one-rear antenna array with three low-noise amplifiers is the most elaborate of the three.

Why do directional arrows matter on a radar detector?

They tell you where the signal is coming from. An alert from ahead is likely the patrol car you're approaching; an alert from behind after you pass a shopping plaza is likely a door opener.

Do you need a rear antenna on a radar detector?

For highway driving, yes. A front-only detector often hears radar from behind only as reflections off traffic ahead, while a rear antenna picks it up directly.

Is the Valentine One Gen2 still worth buying?

For drivers who want raw signal information and to filter it themselves, maybe. It has arrows and Ka coverage from 33.4 to 36.0 GHz, but no GPS, so no lockouts or camera alerts, which is why it scores 4.3.

Which radar detectors with arrows are undetectable?

In our data, the Escort Redline 360c and Redline Ci 360c, the Uniden R7, R8 and R8w, and the Valentine One Gen2 carry manufacturer stealth claims. Stealth doesn't make a detector legal where it's banned.
