How we picked stealth detectors

We started with every detector in our database whose manufacturer publishes a stealth claim against Spectre-type radar-detector detectors (RDDs), which is 11 of the 26 we track, then ranked them with our radar detector rubric. RDD stealth is one of its nine metrics, so every model here earns that point; what separates them is antennas, arrows, MultaRadar detection, GPS lockouts, Ka segmentation and a phone app.

Where scores tie, we break the tie on the strength of the stealth claim itself, since that’s the reason you’re reading this page. Our radar detector hub ranks all 26 models, stealthy or not.

Escort's flagship portable radar and laser detector, with a dual-front, single-rear antenna array, directional arrows, GPS AutoLearn and TotalShield RDD stealth. It suits drivers who want Escort's top portable detection and stealth.

Strengths

  • Dual front and single rear antennas with three LNAs, plus 360-degree arrows
  • TotalShield technology, which Escort says makes it undetectable by radar-detector detectors
  • Software-defined radio receiver and Blackfin DSP
  • GPS AutoLearn, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth with the Drive Smarter app

Watch out for

  • X band is detected by the front antennas only
  • The Defender camera database needs a paid subscription ($24.95 for 1 year or $49.95 for 3 years)
  • MultaRadar CD/CT detection is off by default

Three detectors tie at 10.0. The Redline 360c takes the top spot because of the wording of its claim: Escort’s owner’s manual says TotalShield makes it undetectable by all radar-detector detectors, while Uniden’s claims name only Spectre I and IV.

The hardware backs that up. Escort lists dual front and single rear antennas with three low-noise amplifiers, 360-degree arrows, a software-defined radio receiver and a Blackfin signal processor. It adds GPS AutoLearn, Ka segmentation (KaN1–KaN10), Wi-Fi and Bluetooth with the Drive Smarter app. It launched in June 2020 at $749.95. Two watchouts: MultaRadar detection ships switched off, and Escort’s Defender camera database costs $24.95 for one year or $49.95 for three.

A windshield-mount GPS radar and laser detector with front and rear antennas, directional arrows, Wi-Fi updates and Bluetooth app control. It suits highway drivers who want Uniden's top portable features with wireless updates.

Strengths

  • Front and rear antennas with on-screen arrows for front, side or rear threats
  • Built-in Wi-Fi for firmware and camera database updates, plus Bluetooth to the R/TACH app
  • Detects MultaRadar CD/CT and Gatso RT3/RT4, with Ka segmentation
  • Auto Mute Memory with up to 1,750 GPS lockouts; manual claims Spectre I/IV undetectable

Watch out for

  • Shown as sold out on uniden.com when checked
  • Laser jamming needs optional transponders sold separately

The R8w matches the Redline on our rubric with front and rear antennas, on-screen arrows for front, side or rear threats, MultaRadar CD/CT and Gatso detection, Ka segmentation and Auto Mute Memory with up to 1,750 GPS lockouts. Its manual claims it’s undetectable by Spectre I and IV.

What it adds over the R8 is built-in Wi-Fi for firmware and camera-database updates and Bluetooth to Uniden’s R/TACH app. Uniden publishes no launch MSRP, and it showed as sold out on uniden.com when we checked, so availability may decide this one for you.

Yes

A windshield-mount GPS radar and laser detector with dual antennas, directional arrows and MultaRadar detection. It suits drivers who want front and rear coverage and are happy to update it by computer.

Strengths

  • Dual front and rear antennas with signal direction arrows and a rear-balance setting
  • Detects MultaRadar CD/CT and Gatso, with Ka narrow, wide and segmentation modes
  • Auto Mute Memory learns stationary false alerts; up to 1,750 GPS lockouts
  • Manufacturer claims Spectre I/IV undetectable

Watch out for

  • No Bluetooth or Wi-Fi in the owner's manual; the R8w adds both
  • Sold out on uniden.com, which points buyers to the R8w

The R8 scores 9.3, the top score among stealth detectors without Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, and loses only the app point. Its Auto Mute Memory learns stationary false alerts on its own, where the R7 (7.9) makes you save every lockout by hand. You get the same dual antennas, arrows (with a rear-balance setting), MultaRadar detection, Ka segmentation and 1,750 lockouts as the R8w, plus the same Spectre I and IV claim.

The trade-off is updates: firmware and camera data go over USB from a computer. Uniden’s own store points buyers to the R8w. See how the two compare in Escort MAX 360c MKII vs Uniden R8.

A custom-installed radar and laser defense system with front and rear radar receivers, a remote OLED display and VX Laser Shifters. It suits drivers who want a hidden, professionally installed setup.

Strengths

  • Front and rear radar receivers on dual M14 antennas with Blackfin DSP
  • Five VX Laser Shifters included, with support for up to six
  • TotalShield technology, which Escort says makes it undetectable by radar-detector detectors
  • GPS AutoLearn, Defender database, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi with Drive Smarter

Watch out for

  • Needs professional installation
  • Laser shifters (jammers) are illegal in some states
  • MultaRadar CD/CT detection is off by default

The Redline Ci 360c is the only remote-mount detector with a stealth claim in our data. Front and rear radar receivers on dual M14 antennas are hidden in the car, with a remote OLED display, so there’s nothing on the windshield for anyone to see. Escort makes the same TotalShield claim and includes five VX Laser Shifters (laser jammers), with support for six.

It launched at $4,299.95 and needs professional installation. Escort itself warns that laser shifters are illegal in some states, which our radar detector legality guide covers.

Yes

A GPS radar and laser detector with automatic lockouts, MultaRadar CD/CT detection and a full-color OLED screen. It suits commuters who want quiet, automatic false-alert filtering and Bluetooth app control in a front-facing unit.

Strengths

  • Automatic and manual GPS lockouts, with memory for 16,500 auto lockouts
  • Detects MultaRadar CD/CT and Gatso photo radar, plus red-light and speed camera alerts
  • Bluetooth 5.0 for the Radenso Nexus app and third-party apps; USB-C power
  • Manufacturer claims stealth against VG-2 and Spectre Elite detectors

Watch out for

  • No rear antenna or directional arrows listed
  • Shown as sold out on radenso.com
  • 1-year warranty as standard

Below the dual-antenna flagships, two front-facing detectors tie at 7.1: the Radenso DS1 and the Uniden R4w. We pick the DS1 because Radenso’s claim covers both VG-2 and Spectre Elite, the wider named list, and it stores up to 16,500 automatic GPS lockouts, against 1,750 on the R4w.

It also detects MultaRadar CD/CT and Gatso, supports Ka segmentation and links over Bluetooth 5.0 to the Radenso Nexus app. There’s no rear antenna, and radenso.com showed it as sold out when checked. The Uniden R4w is the closest alternative, with Wi-Fi updates and the R/TACH app.

Uniden R3 5.0 Undetectable by Spectre I and IV
Valentine One Gen2 4.3 Undetectable by radar-detector detectors
Uniden DFR7 2.9 Undetectable by Spectre I and IV

The Valentine One Gen2 shows why stealth alone isn’t enough. It has front and rear antennas, arrows and a stealth claim, but no GPS, no automatic lockouts, no camera database and no MultaRadar claim, so it scores 4.3. The Uniden DFR7 is a budget GPS unit with only 100 manually saved Mute Memory points and no MultaRadar detection.

What is a radar-detector detector (RDD)?

Most radar detectors use a superheterodyne receiver: an internal oscillator generates a signal that’s mixed with incoming radar to shift it to a frequency the processor can analyse. A little of that oscillator signal leaks out of the detector. An RDD is a sensitive receiver that listens for that leakage, which lets police spot an operating detector in a passing car.

The two names you’ll see in claims are the VG-2, an older RDD, and the newer Spectre family (Spectre I, IV and Elite). Because Spectre units are the newer design, a claim against VG-2 alone is the weaker promise. That’s why the Cobra RAD 480i, whose manual claims invisibility to VG-2 only, isn’t on this list. For the full receiver story, see how radar detectors work.

Barely. In the 49 states where detectors are legal in passenger cars, nobody is scanning for them because there’s nothing to enforce. Stealth earns just 1 of 14 points in our rubric for that reason; it can’t make up for a missing rear antenna or GPS lockouts.

Our scoring makes the cost of stealth easy to see within Escort’s range. The Escort MAX 360 MKII has dual antennas, arrows, MultaRadar, AutoLearn and Ka segmentation but no stealth claim, and scores 9.3 with a launch MSRP of $599.95. The Redline 360c adds TotalShield (the one rubric point the MAX 360 MKII misses) plus Wi-Fi, for a 10.0 score at a $749.95 launch MSRP. If stealth isn’t on your list, the MAX 360 MKII buys almost the same detector for $150 less at launch.

Stealth matters in three situations: you drive through Virginia or D.C. (where it still doesn’t make a detector legal), you drive a commercial vehicle (same), or you value it as a sign of a well-shielded, quieter receiver.

Are stealth claims verified?

No. There’s no independent certification for RDD stealth. Every claim on this page is the manufacturer’s own, so read the wording carefully. A few examples from our data show how much it varies:

  • Escort says the Redline 360c and Redline Ci 360c are undetectable by RDDs, makes no claim for the MAX 360c MKII, and says outright that the MAXcam 360c is detectable.
  • Uniden claims Spectre I and IV stealth for its windshield R-series and the DFR7, but the manual for the R9w, its hidden custom-install system, makes no such claim.
  • Whistler has a setting called “Stealth” on the Titan, but it’s a display screensaver, not RDD immunity.

The safest reading: a stealth claim is evidence the manufacturer designed for low leakage, not a guarantee against every RDD in service.

Which stealth detector should you buy?

  • You want the best detector, full stop, and stealth is a bonus: Escort Redline 360c. It’s tied for the top score, has the broadest claim and adds Wi-Fi and app alerts. Budget for Defender if you want camera alerts.
  • You want flagship hardware without a subscription: Uniden R8w. Same 10.0 score, Wi-Fi updates and the R/TACH app, with camera alerts included in the detector.
  • You’d rather have no wireless radios at all: Uniden R8, accepting USB updates.
  • You want nothing visible on the glass: Escort Redline Ci 360c, a professional install with laser shifters you must check against your state’s laws.
  • You commute in town and don’t need a rear antenna: Radenso DS1, or the Uniden R4w if the DS1 is unavailable.

What do you give up for stealth?

On paper, nothing in this group. The three 10.0 detectors here have every feature our rubric weighs, so you’re not trading detection hardware for a stealth claim. The trade-offs are elsewhere: Escort’s Defender subscription, Uniden’s USB-only updates on the R7 and R8, and patchy availability, with several Uniden and Radenso models showing as sold out on their makers’ stores when checked.

If a detector you like isn’t here, such as the Escort MAX 360c MKII, it may still be excellent; it just doesn’t publish a stealth claim. Our radar detector bands explainer covers the settings that matter more day to day than stealth.

Can you pair stealth with laser defence?

Laser is the threat stealth does nothing about, because a laser gun measures speed before a detector can usefully warn you. Some of these systems support laser jammers, which manufacturers call shifters or transponders:

  • The Escort Redline Ci 360c includes five VX Laser Shifters and supports six.
  • The Uniden R8w supports laser jamming through optional transponders sold separately.
  • The Uniden R9w integrates laser transponders (front required, rear optional), but its manual makes no Spectre claim, which is why it isn’t ranked here.

Jammers carry far more legal risk than detectors. Virginia’s statute covers devices that interfere with police laser, and Texas makes radar or laser interference devices a Class C misdemeanor, so read our legality guide before adding one.

Where do police actually use RDDs?

The honest answer is that there’s no public dataset of RDD deployment, so we won’t guess at numbers. RDDs only have an enforcement job where detectors are banned: Virginia, Washington D.C., and commercial vehicles over 10,000 lbs under federal rules.

If you drive in those places, the right answer is to leave the detector unplugged and out of reach. Virginia’s statute excuses a device that has no power source and isn’t readily accessible to anyone in the car; D.C. bans possession outright. Our full radar detector legality guide quotes both, and our best radar detectors ranking covers the strongest picks for everywhere else.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most undetectable radar detector?

On published claims, the Escort Redline 360c. Escort's manual says its TotalShield technology makes it undetectable by all radar-detector detectors, a broader claim than Uniden's Spectre I and IV wording.

Is the Uniden R8 undetectable?

Uniden claims the R8 is undetectable by Spectre I and IV radar-detector detectors. That's a manufacturer claim, not an independent certification.

Can police detect a Valentine One Gen2?

Valentine says the V1 Gen2 is undetectable by radar-detector detectors. It scores only 4.3 on our rubric because it lacks GPS, automatic lockouts and MultaRadar detection.

Does an undetectable radar detector make it legal in Virginia?

No. Va. Code § 46.2-1079 bans operating a vehicle equipped with a radar detector whether or not police can detect it, and Washington D.C. bans possessing one.

Are radar detector stealth claims verified?

Not by any independent standard. They're manufacturer claims, often tied to specific RDD models such as VG-2 or Spectre I and IV, so read exactly which devices a claim names.
