How we picked parking mode dash cams
We included only cams with true buffered parking recording, which rules out 4 of the 34 models we track, and ranked the remaining 30 on our published rubric. Buffered parking is itself worth 2 of the rubric’s 16 points, and supercapacitor heat tolerance another 2. The full method is on our how we evaluate page.
Beyond the score, we compare parking-specific specs: the number of parking modes, storage for long recording history, pre-event buffer length and heat rating.

The A329S 3CH scores 9.3. It, the T330 3CH and the T340 3CH list VIOFO’s five parking modes, including a hybrid mode that combines buffered event recording with time-lapse; the A229 Pro 3CH and A229 Ultra 3CH list three. Of the five-mode trio, only the A329S has a screen, and it adds support for an external SSD up to 4TB.
That storage point matters more parked than driving. A parked car can sit for days, and three channels of footage fill a 512GB card faster than one. An SSD extends how far back you can go. It records 4K front, 2K rear and a 2K 210° cabin camera, all with HDR. Parking needs VIOFO’s HK4 or HK6 hardwire kit.
Best with remote alerts (built-in LTE)

- Thinkware lists a maximum operating temperature of 60°C
The Thinkware U3000 Pro 2CH has radar built into both the front and rear cameras for parking surveillance. Radar senses movement around the car, which lets the cam stay in a lower-power state until something approaches. When it triggers, buffered recording saves 10 seconds before and after the event. It scores 8.6.
It’s a screenless 4K front, 2K rear design on STARVIS 2 sensors, with optional LTE through Thinkware’s module and plan. Thinkware lists a 60°C maximum operating temperature, the lowest of our picks, so it’s better suited to garages and shade than open lots in Phoenix.
Best 2-channel with hybrid parking
VIOFO A329S 2CH
- Front resolution
- 2,160 px
- STARVIS 2 sensor
- Yes
- Coverage (channels)
- 2

Among 2-channel cams, the 4K-rear A229 Ultra 2CH and BlackVue Elite 10-2CH score highest, at 9.1. The A329S 2CH (8.6) has the deepest parking feature set of any 2-channel cam: five modes including hybrid, plus external SSD support. It also records 4K at 60fps up front, unique in our database, and 2K on a STARVIS 2 IMX675 at the rear.
Like every VIOFO, it’s a supercapacitor design rated to 65°C, and parking needs the HK4 or HK6 kit. If you want front and rear without a cabin camera, this is the parking-focused pick.
Best with a large screen
Thinkware ARC900 2CH
- Front resolution
- 2,160 px
- STARVIS 2 sensor
- Yes
- Coverage (channels)
- 2

Buffered, time-lapse or impact-only: what is the difference?
Parking modes decide what gets saved while you’re away (our parking mode explainer goes deeper):
- Buffered motion. The cam records continuously into memory. When it detects motion or an impact, it saves a clip that starts several seconds before the trigger. That’s how you see the car approaching, not just the bump. 30 of our 34 cams offer it.
- Time-lapse. The cam records at a very low frame rate (Thinkware’s F70 Pro lists 2fps) for hours, then plays it back quickly. It’s efficient on storage but can skip the exact moment of a fast impact. 32 cams offer it.
- Low-bitrate. Continuous recording at reduced quality, which saves space while keeping every second. 17 cams offer it: every VIOFO and both Vantrues in our data.
- Impact-only. The G-sensor wakes the cam after a jolt, so the clip starts once the damage is done. Cams that list only this or time-lapse, such as the WOLFBOX G900TriPro, REDTIGER F7NP and Miofive S1 Pro, don’t make this roundup.
Watch the fine print. The Garmin Dash Cam X310 has a 15-second pre-incident buffer, but only with external power, and its Parking Guard alerts need Wi-Fi and a Vault subscription. The 70mai T800 lists AI motion detection and time-lapse but no buffer.
Do you need a hardwire kit for parking mode?
Yes. Every one of the 30 buffered cams in our data needs a hardwire kit or a dash cam battery pack for parking mode. Most are supercapacitor designs, which hold just enough charge to close the last file when power drops; the battery-powered Garmin still needs external power for its buffer.
A 12V socket usually switches off with the ignition, so plugging into one gives you no parking coverage at all. A hardwire kit taps your fuse box for a constant feed, plus an ignition feed so the cam knows when you’ve parked. Kits are model-specific: VIOFO lists the HK4, HK6 or HK6-F depending on the model, and Thinkware’s ARC900 includes its hardwire cable. Our step-by-step hardwiring guide walks through the fuse-tap install.
Will parking mode drain your car battery?
It can if you skip the safeguard. Every hardwire kit worth using has a low-voltage cutoff: it watches the car battery and shuts the cam down before the voltage drops too far to crank the engine.
A healthy 12V car battery at rest reads around 12.6V when fully charged. Set the cutoff higher in winter, when cold cuts cranking power, or if your battery is a few years old. Many kits and cams also offer a parking timer that ends recording after a set number of hours. If your car sits for days at a time, an external dash cam battery pack powers parking mode without touching the car battery at all.
For more on low-power modes, Thinkware lists energy-saving and radar-assisted modes, and BlackVue lists a power-saving mode on the Elite 9.
Which cams handle a hot parked car?
Parking mode means the cam works hardest when the cabin is hottest: a closed car in summer sun. The supercapacitor designs our rubric rewards survive that far better than lithium batteries, but published maximum operating temperatures still differ:
- 70°C: BlackVue DR970X LTE Plus II and DR590X-2CH Plus.
- 65°C: every VIOFO and every BlackVue Elite model, including the Elite 10-2CH.
- 60°C: every Thinkware, both Vantrues and the Garmin X310.
If you park outdoors in a hot climate, a sunshade helps whatever you buy, and the 70°C and 65°C groups give you more margin.
How do you choose the right parking mode?
Match the mode to where the car sits:
- Busy street or open car park: buffered motion detection will trigger often as people walk past. Hybrid mode on the five-mode VIOFOs combines time-lapse with buffered event clips, so you get both context and detail.
- Quiet driveway or private garage: buffered motion detection on its own catches the rare event without filling the card.
- Long-term parking at an airport: time-lapse or low-bitrate stretches recording time, and a higher low-voltage cutoff or a parking timer protects the battery for the drive home. Radar-triggered parking on the Thinkware U3000 Pro suits long, quiet stretches.
- Car parked away from home, theft worries: only LTE gets you alerts as it happens. The DR970X has it built in; most BlackVue, Thinkware and Vantrue models need an add-on module.
Whatever mode you pick, set the motion sensitivity once and check the next morning how many clips it saved. Dozens of clips from passing traffic mean the sensitivity is too high.
Which parking mode dash cam should you buy?
- Most drivers: VIOFO A229 Ultra 3CH.
- Hybrid parking and long history: VIOFO A329S 3CH, or the T330 3CH if you prefer screenless.
- Street parking, want live alerts: BlackVue DR970X LTE Plus II.
- Long parked stretches: Thinkware U3000 Pro 2CH with radar.
- Front and rear only, with hybrid parking: VIOFO A329S 2CH.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best dash cam with parking mode?
On our rubric, the VIOFO A229 Ultra 3CH. It scores 9.7, the top score among buffered cams, and records 4K front and rear plus a 1080p cabin camera in buffered, time-lapse and low-bitrate parking modes. For hybrid parking and an external SSD up to 4TB, the A329S 3CH (9.3) is the alternative.
Do I need a hardwire kit for dash cam parking mode?
Yes, for every cam we track. All 30 models with buffered parking need a hardwire kit or external battery pack, because their supercapacitors can't power recording when the car is off.
Will parking mode drain my car battery?
Not if you set the hardwire kit's low-voltage cutoff. The kit switches the cam off before the battery falls too low to start the engine; choose a higher cutoff in cold weather or for an older battery.
What is buffered parking mode?
The cam records continuously to memory in parking mode and only saves a clip when motion or an impact is detected, including the seconds before the trigger. Impact-only modes start recording after the hit.
Which dash cam handles heat best in a parked car?
Among buffered models, the BlackVue DR970X LTE Plus II and DR590X-2CH Plus carry the highest published rating, 70°C. VIOFO and BlackVue Elite models list 65°C; Thinkware and Vantrue list 60°C.
